Create Your Online IRS Account

The IRS has partnered with ID.me to roll out individual accounts for us. Everyone should have one and get familiar with it sooner than later. Full disclosure: the ID.me verification process can be really tedious for some people, but once you’re in it’s SO useful.

To get started, create an ID.me account here. Once you've verified your identity and logged into your account, you’ll be able to retrieve notices you’ve misplaced during the year, check your balance due and make payments, approve Power of Attorney or Tax Information Authorization requests, and instantly download tax records for the current tax year. You can also download transcripts that detail your account activity, tax return information, or wages and income. Your transcripts go back four years.

If you establish your account now, it’ll save you time throughout the year, especially when you’re doing your taxes. So get in there! You won’t regret it, and your tax professional will thank you.
